Aging in Place 11.24

The members of the Aging in Place group meet in the Tye Conference room on Thursday, October 17, 2024. We began by discussing a Boston Globe  article by Judy Kugel --” The Worst Decision of Our Lives” – along with a variety of comments by readers. The decision at issue was one many of us have thought about in our own lives and seen family members, colleagues, and friends contemplate: whether to move into a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) or seek how best to live independently. Studies have shown that while a large majority of Americans want to grow old in their own homes, financial and other obstacles prevent many from being able to do so. Drawing on personal experiences and those of family and friends, we explored financial, family-related, and medical factors that influence such decisions. We concluded that it would be helpful to prepare a working list of resources that might be of help in dealing with such factors as they arise over time as we aim to continue “aging in place.”
